A Shroud of Respect

(2024)

In A Shroud of Respect, we follow the creative journey of artist Sophia Voskuil as she brings to life her experimental painting The Daughters Of. This work serves as a powerful appropriation of Peter Paul Rubens' The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus, reimagining the original in a contemporary context to comment on the exploitation and treatment of women in art history. The film captures every stage of the process, from the initial concept to the final brushstroke, with a striking combination of 4K footage and 16mm film, highlighting the contrast between past and present. Through this visual dialogue, the film invites viewers to reflect on the progress or lack thereof, in how women have been represented in the art world over time. A Shroud of Respect is an exploration of history, gender, and artistic reinvention, asking how far we’ve truly come in shifting the narrative.
